Tochigi » Nasukarasuyama, Nakagawa Town (Tochigi)
The museum houses a total of 94 prints and paintings by Utagawa Hiroshige, as well as works by Kobayashi Seichika, Kawamura Kiyoo, Tokutomi Soho, and others, and approximately 4,500 related materials. In particular, the museum owns more than 40 original paintings known as “Tendo Hiroshige,” which is one of the most valuable collections among museums in Japan.
The museum opened in 2000, following the donation of a collection of approximately 4200 pieces of ukiyoe (Japanese woodblock prints), crafts, and books, including original paintings and prints by Hiroshige Utagawa, calligraphy by Soho Tokutomi, and other works collected by businessman Tosaku Aoki (born in present-day Sakura City) from the Taisho and Showa eras.
The museum building was designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, who also designed the National Stadium, and uses locally grown Yamizo cedar, harmonizing the surrounding landscape with Hiroshige art. It received the Director-General’s Award of the Forestry Agency (2000), the Marronnier Architecture Award (2000, Governor of Tochigi Prefecture), the Togo Murano Award (2001), the 42nd BCS Award (2001), and the Architectural Institute of Japan’s Work of the Year Award (2003).
The museum is surrounded by soba noodle restaurants, Western-style restaurants, and a café (open irregularly) located inside the museum.
